Who We Are

The Ancient Mariners Canoe Club is a group of seniors who share an interest in outdoor activities, particularly canoeing, hiking, cross-country skiing and preserving the environment.

Members are aged 55 or over and must belong to one of the City of Cambridge 50+ Recreation Centres. The club is equally attractive to men and women; current membership is fairly evenly divided. Members come from all walks of life. Most, but not all, are retired.

Most of our activities are held mid-week, usually on a Tuesday. Mariners gather at our Boathouse in Riverbluffs Park, Cambridge, to register for the day’s outing.

Canoeing ability is not mandatory to join the club. A comprehensive training program is in place and long-term members mentor new members.

The Canoe Club was formed in 1988 with approximately 20 members. Today we have 125 members. This is considered the maximum reasonable number to permit our activities to run smoothly and safely.

The club is under the auspices of the City of Cambridge and run by a board of directors. The board consists of a president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, and the chairs of various operating committees.
